To sell a digital product you need four things: a file people want, a price, a checkout that takes payment and sends the file automatically, and a place where buyers find you. You can start in a day with a free storefront or a marketplace such as Etsy or Gumroad; the main differences are the fee per sale and who handles sales tax.
A digital product is anything a buyer downloads or opens online after paying: an ebook, a template, a printable, presets, a course, music, fonts or a prompt pack. You make it once and sell it many times, with no stock or shipping.
Pick a problem you have already solved for yourself or for clients, then check that strangers are paying for something similar.
Price on the value of the result, then check what you keep after fees. Fixed per-order fees hurt cheap items most, so very low prices often earn less than you expect.
Use a checkout that sends the download link automatically the moment payment clears, so you never email files by hand.
Tax on digital goods depends on where the buyer lives, not only where you live. The simplest route for a small seller is a platform that acts as "merchant of record" and collects and pays the tax for you.
Use a storefront link that has its own checkout and put it in your social bio, then share each product directly in posts, stories and messages.
Your first sales usually come from people who already know you, so tell them directly before you spend anything on ads.
Products that save time on a specific job sell steadily: templates (Canva, Notion, spreadsheets), printables and planners, presets and LUTs, short ebooks and guides, and courses. Specific beats general: "meal planner for diabetics" sells more easily than "planner".
Yes, but know the limits. The US Copyright Office says material generated purely by AI from prompts is not protected by copyright; your own writing, editing, selection and arrangement are (Copyright and AI, Part 2). Add real expertise and editing so the product is yours and worth buying, and follow each marketplace's rules on AI disclosure.
It depends on your country and city. Many places let you start as an individual and register once income grows; check with your local tax office or an accountant.
A short, clear refund policy builds trust. Many sellers refund within 7 to 14 days when the file does not work or does not match the description. Write the policy on the product page so it is agreed before purchase.
You cannot fully stop it. Sell through links that are sent only after payment, put the buyer's licence terms inside the file, and focus on updates, support and community that a copied file does not include.
A marketplace brings shoppers but charges more and owns the customer relationship; your own store keeps the customer and email but you bring the traffic. Many sellers list on a marketplace for discovery and send their own audience to their own store.
Offer three versions: the product, the product plus extras, and a bundle. Add a small add-on at checkout (a bonus pack or a 1-to-1 review). Fixed per-order fees then take a smaller share of each sale.
Templates, fonts, music and graphics can be sold with a personal licence and a higher-priced commercial licence. Spell out what each allows inside the file and on the page.
Every buyer is someone who already paid you once. Collect emails with consent, send updates to the product, and launch the next product to them first; it is the cheapest sale you will make.
Watch which questions buyers ask after purchase. Each repeated question is the next product: a companion workbook, an advanced version, a done-for-you service.
Product page visitors, purchase rate (orders divided by visitors), and refund rate. A low purchase rate means the page or price; a high refund rate means the product or the description.
AI tools can take a digital product from idea to listing much faster. They work best on the parts that take time, while the knowledge and the final judgement stay yours.
Check facts, quotes and numbers that AI writes, avoid copying other sellers' text or designs, and do not promise results you cannot show.
What you keep from a $10 download on common options, using each platform's published fees (card processing at Stripe's standard US rate where the platform charges it on top).
| Option | Monthly cost | Fee per sale | You keep on $10 | Handles sales tax and VAT for you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lemon Squeezy | $0 | 5% + 50¢ (pricing) | $9.00 | Yes, merchant of record |
| Payhip (free plan) | $0 | 5% + card processing (pricing) | about $8.91 | No |
| Gumroad | $0 | 10% + 50¢ (pricing) | $8.50 before any processing | Yes, merchant of record |
| Etsy | $0 | $0.20 listing + 6.5% + 3% + 25¢ processing in the US (Etsy) | about $8.60 | Collects in many places |
| Pludor | $0 | 4.99% + 90¢ + card processing (pricing) | about $8.01 | No |
| Your own Stripe checkout | $0 | 2.9% + 30¢ (Stripe) | $9.41 | No, and you build delivery yourself |
On a $10 item, fixed per-order fees matter most; at $50 and up the gap between platforms narrows. Marketplaces also bring shoppers, which your own store does not. Fees checked 1 October 2026; they change, so check before you choose.
Pludor is a free store where digital downloads sit next to physical products, courses, bookings and subscriptions, with checkout that sends the file after payment. It suits sellers who want one store and one link for everything they sell, plus free tools and AI for covers, descriptions and promo videos. On low-priced single downloads its fixed 90¢ per order makes it more expensive than some options above.
